*Buff Orpington Thread!*

I would have to say roo myself. That comb and those wattles are just too red not to be. On another topic, I agree with whoever said that they had a hard time telling their orps apart. Mine are fully grown, and in my flock of 20 of them, I can barely tell who's who!

I got a question for anyone who knows from experience. Are the buff Orpington chickens from murry McMurtry hatchery in Iowa just as good as any or can you tell by looking that they are hatchery birds. I don't hve a problem with typical hatchery birds I have some barred rocks from a hatchery but I am looking for some really nice Buff Orpingtons they don't have to be show quality but I want correct looking ones any experienced input on buff orpingtons from murry McMurtry hatchery would be appreciated

The two wet ones that peanutmomma has would pass my standard even being wet

So that would set my standard if that helps

I've just recently started my back yard flock two weeks ago. So far I have a black Australorp and a light Sussex. Tomorrow I'm getting two buff Orpington girls and I can't wait! I'm so excited about this breed!:)

We've got a 5 week old Buff that was sexed as a female. She has feathered out like a girl but has developed a set of blushing hot pink wattles and comb. Meanwhile the two that were sexed as males are feathering out slowly and typically for males with bare wing bows no tails and general scruffy appearance and have small combs and just the start of wattles. They all hatched within hours of one another. Our other Buff pullets are feathered out like Ms Big Wattles but with typical small pale combs.

So what gives? This chick has always been bigger than the others but at this moment she's out roostering the boys who are the same age. Are good genetics just at play here? Male or female this is gonna be a big chicken.

Nugget was unanimously voted a cockerel already at 4 weeks, and here he is now at 7 weeks. No crowing yet, but I think it is time to start looking for a new home before the kids and I get anymore attached! He is so sweet and acts nothing like how I have heard roosters described so far. He is always the last to eat treats when they are put out and seems to not mind being held. He has never pecked or bitten any of us. His sweetness makes it really hard to think if saying goodbye :(
So, I thought I would post a few more pics incase anyone with experience sees anything that says I should give him a little more time to prove he is a rooster.

Thanks farmboss! Peanut and Penny are hatchery chicks that we bought last year from My Pet Chicken. It was only later I found out they were actually shipped from Meyer Hatchery. They have been happy healthy sweetie pies since day 1. Hopefully our next Buffs will come from MsKay.

There is guy in our local chicken club who says, "Until it crows it is a pullet."

I know that doesn't help very much but he is probably on the verge of crowing. Our Buff roo started crowing at 7 weeks and then stopped and started up again at about 10 weeks. I wish you could keep him because there is nothing like a sweet rooster.

Welcome to the Buff thread Buckbeak01. Have you gotten your Buffs yet? It caught my eye that you are in NC because my husband and I are looking for property in Western NC. We love it up there!
