Most definitely. When on the farm many years ago, we always put 12 - 15 eggs under our bigger girls with no problem. If they hide their nest out somewhere, they always have quite a few eggs in their clutch. They are really good mothers also.

We have one multi-breed coop that I'm thinking of clearing out so I can keep just one breed. We'd want friendly hens and roo (Bob, the Sussex roo is a sweetheart) as well as good laying for eating and hatching eggs. It's been suggested that Buff Orps would be good. Do you think they'd fit the bill, and would the personality vary with the color? I kinda like the look of the lavender orps.

I've never had the lavender but I can tell you that I've had hatchery and now pure buff's and for personality they are just super. I also have the Sussex, now they are the Australian Sussex (Light and Coronation) from Greenfire Farms. I've had 2 of the Coronation Roos and both were mean. The light roos are to die for. Big, beautiful, friendly and the hens do lay a bigger egg than the Orpingtons and they go broody also. At least mine have. I hatched 2 eggs from them this spring and can you believe, I got a pair. They are just about 5 months old and really big. The cockerel is as big as my year old RIR. lol
If you are wanting really big eggs, the red or black stars from McMurray hatchery lay the largest eggs I've ever seen. If you are wanting quiet friendly birds the Buffs are tops. Just something to think about. Right now I am in the process of crossing over to all heritage breeds/lines so I don't have the hatchery birds anymore.
You can take a peek if you want. my site is http://jimspetsandpoultry.weebly.com

We see very little differences with the temperament of our Orpingtons in either large fowl or bantams. With color, we have all the Standard colors and the Self Blue (Lavender). they all seem about the same.

I love my Orps, But if your looking for a one breed hen house full of chickens that are friendly, curious, personable birds that live to lay eggs, I'd go Australorp. They have some Orpington in them and they hold the world record for eggs in a year at 364. Right now My coop is a 50 50 mix of Buff Orps and Astralorps. I am going to cross breed them and go with them for a while.

I have been away from the poultry fold for a long time. I got a few Buff Orpingtons back in April.

The Orpingtons are just as I expected, they have been a wonderful breed to work with and enjoy

Its has been a great experience watching them grow and change.

I couldn't have chosen a better breed as a stepping stone to get back into poultry.
