The ones in the yard looked like pullets...the one on your lap seems to have a rather large comb and wattles for the breed and age (in my mind). This year I purchased 6 buff orpingtons who are 17 weeks old now. Only the rooster's seem to have large red combs; the pullets still have small pink combs. Of course, 2 weeks can make a LOT of difference with chickens. Hope for you it's a pullet
I have two buff orpington hens, they look exactly like yours.
They started laying last week. I purchased them as two day
old chicks on Feb. 11, 2009. So, they are five months old
and are laying an egg a day. I have one other Americauna,
she is finally starting to lay with them. Today, they took turns
and laid the eggs in same box. They looked like the lined up,
waited and in an hour I had three eggs. One pinkish brown, one
brown and one bluegreen from the Americauna.
I have milk crates that I cut out half of one side, put hay
in it and they use those. I was told between five and six months they would start laying and they were absolutely correct.
for food, i give them layer crumbles, corn scratch and a pinch
of the ground up oyster shells. They go out to walk the five acres every day, they come in around 10:ish to start laying and they go back out when they are done and around 7:30 or dusk, they start roosting in their pen and we lock the coop.
The combs on the roosters are usually a bit taller, they lay a bit to the side and the tail feathers stick up more. Don't have one but was told that. I could be completely off base on the Roo's but that is what I was told today. I went out and picked up two more hens.
Another Americauna and a Rock crossed NHR.
Good luck
