I will be getting some babies here in the next few weeks and I was hoping those of you with experience in Orpingtons and Barred Rock babies could offer any advice that you may have! I have heard that both are pretty friendly as a general rule (which is a must - I'm the type that befriends and plays with everything!

But are there any quirks that a first-timer should know? Anything you've found they prefer over something else? Etc..

Thanks in advance!

The only thing that you should know is that you're going to love them! I have one BO and two BRs and they are super sweet. My BO is very friendly and loves neck scratches but doesn't like to be held as much as the BRs. The BRs just LOVE to cuddle - they are my sweet babies

We have some BO and some of them will jump up on my lap, sometimes 2 or 3 at a time!

You two have just tripled my excitement!

My poor hubby, he thinks he has a hard enough time getting the pig and dog off my lap - now we're throwing lovable chicks into the mix as well!

Dee (our orph) and frisco (our barred) are my favorites out of our birds. Dee is super sweet and, i dont know if you can call it flying, but she manages to get up on the yard perch to be petted and scratched and frisco appears to have a huge personality. Frisco is the first one, and only one the remember where the door is every time, to leave the run and run up to us when we have snacks or treats and is the first to perch on an available arm. (I call my daughters "chicken wisperers) Our reds are a bit more standoffish but they are good too.

On a side note, nothing is funnier than watching the last bird out of the coop running the opposite way of the run gate to try to catch up with her sisters, only to run back and forth until we come rescue her.

I have two BO and thy seem to get along with everyone else. Don't have BR's but hear they are nice.

Hey, they're chickens, what could be wrong with them?

Wish you the best

I have both and love both. Orps are sweet, calm birds. My first Orp girl honked like a goose. My BR is calm as well, though she prefers to not be picked up. But she is a loudmouth and when I go in the run it sounds like she's cursing me out.

My three favorite girls are Buffy BO, Betsy BR, and Molly BA. They are hoots! And Buffy hatched my first GrandChick, too. They're all talkative, mill about my feet for more than just treats, and are good lookin', too.

You won't be sorry with BOs and BRs at all.

I have 12 BR and they are great. The roosters (I have 4) are easy enough to manage (keep 'em in check like any other rooster and they will leave you alone) and my hens are sweethearts. BR's are sex-linked too. The gray ones are roosters and the black ones are hens. The combs get huge on the roosters too. They always say that you can tell a rooster because they crow but I knew before then. They are gentle and my 3 year old loves to help me feed them. Congrats!

None of my hens liked to be picked up

So sad ! They do run up to me looking for treats and my barred will sit at the front door waiting for us to come out!
