Buff Orpingtons from Cackle

Hi Chris,

Welcome to the flock!!! My very first order of birds came from Cackle Hatchery. I have the barred rock. I orded them in April of 08' and they began laying 20 weeks to the day and have not stopped yet even with slightly cooler temps here in SC and shorter days. I did not lose one bird to sickness or disease.

I would suggest raising the cockeral with your pullets. Thats what I did and it worked out really well.

Good luck!! Just a word of caution, raising chickens can be very addictive. I am currently in the process of starting to raise some Jersey Giants.

And all turned out to be pullets? That is great. I figured with a 90% guarantee that they would slip in a couple of roosters.

Hi there, I got my first order of chickens from Cackle the end of July. I have been very happy w/ the chickens and with Cackle as far as customer service, delivery, etc. And a week ago I got my first eggs!
The Buff Orps I ordered from them do have some brown feathers in the tail that have developed in the last month, but w/hatchery chickens I don't think you can expect their coloring to be perfect. Their temperment is great.
As far as the roo, I ordered one roo and got two out of 15 pullets ordered. But I liked the fact that I could then choose the best roo out of the two to keep. I gave the other one away.

I would get 2 Roos for 15 hens. I do 1:8 ratio. I would order them all at the same time, just to keep the same age and prevent weirdness introducing them later. It wouldn't kill the deal either way, this is just what I would do
