I am a new member of BYC, although I have been learning from the site for over a year. I have 4 orpington hens who are about a year and 3 months old. They are great egg layers even in the winter. My question is: Can't I get some fertile eggs, and put them under the hens and will they hatch them. I'd like some new chicks, but we have no Rooster.
Happy dasher in Grass Valley!!

Doesn't the hen have to be broody for her to set on the eggs though? Or maybe she is and I missed something....?

Anyway good luck with your chooks!

Yes, your hen will have to be broody. She will be broody if she stays on the nest longer and longer fusses or pics at you when you try to remove her also her voice sort of changes. She will not lay and be very quiet unless disturbed then fussy. Remove her from the nest several times to make sure she is sincere in this. Sometimes they are not quite ready. Mostly they will become broody in the spring but sometimes at odd times of the year too. Good luck with your orpingtons . What color are they. Jean PS WELCOME to BYC
