buff orpingtons

My "Top Hen" is a Buff Orpington. She "rules the Roost" (except for Top Rooster!)
also my BEST "broody"......and BEST "layer".....

She's a bit "bossy"....even tried to "buffalo" ME ! (that didn't work very well for her.)

I have exhibition Orps and closer to production Orps. I noticed the production quality crew, is a take no crud from anyone types. They tend to be the ones who end it. The bigger exhibition boys are cream puffs. If you are getting younger birds, introduce them at nite. The next day, there will be a show of dominance by the bigger birds. But, they will get over it and go back to eating. As punishment for tail feather eaters, I put them in a pen with bigger birds. And they do get their butts kicked. So, you will have to keep an eye out for a few hours. The bigger birds can tare open a smaller bird.
And just to prove we can ALL get along, I have a coop for bachelors, with about 8 cockerels and one Roo. ALL GET ALONG. After the initiation period. Every new boy who goes in usually makes it out okay. And I have a Birchen Marans cockerel, an Australorp Roo ( he runs the place ), 2 Golden Comet cockerels who look like Red RIR's with white legs ( anyone want one? lol ), a RIR cockerel, a Black/Buff Orp mix, a huge Black Orp with TOO LITE an eye ( I just like him that is why he is alive ). Plus a Wyandot or two. All live together. And they have some room. So we're all one happy bachelor pad. And if they can make it together. You should be okay. lolol

lildinkem,

It's nice that your MALE chickens get along OK. But, I would suggest, that IF you get any "game"-type roos...keep them separate. They will definitely FIGHT.....and to the death.

The more "domesticated" chickens are "not-necessarily" that aggresive.

I Totally agree. That is why I listed what breeds were in that pen. The most aggressive bird in male boys pen is prolly either my Birchen Marans, he is number two to Mert the Australorp. The rest sorta stand around and watch and eat.

Thanks so much for the info,I have made up my mind,I will be getting the BO`s in the spring. Is a pencil laced hamburg considered a game bird?He is in with my 30 girls and just relized he is a rooster last month.

henney penny,

Although I know next to nothing about the "Pencil-Laced Hamburg" chickens, I think I am SAFE in saying that they are NOT "game-chickens". Obviously "bred" for the lacing and NOT for "fighting". SAFE, I'd say...........NOW, IF you were talking about "Asil" or "Aseel"...........or some breed from S.E. Asia.....that would likely be a "different story".

Hope this "semi-uneducated" opinion helps........
