Thanks, Sonoran.
I have now had 8 hatch out. Three look like the black chipmunky chicks. Two are buff with a blue undercoat. Two have been pretty little clear buffs and one is the buff with the dots. All of my stock originally came from Jack Ferguson and I thought he was the one that said there was black bred back in. That has been some years back though and I have an old brain so it is entirely possible that THAT was not what he said. It is entirely possible he was talking about breeding in blue to get rid of black and I misunderstood him.
With my last rooster (who shows a little black in his tail) I got a great round of mostly clear chicks. I had a couple that were too pale for my tastes and a couple that had black leaking in tails and wing tips. Most, however, were a nice all-over even buff. I traded out the rooster from last year and started using this new boy, a clear dark who shows zero black or blue. None of my hens are showing blue or black either, but I have kept all of the darkest buffs. This hatch was a bit of a surprise to see them coming out so dark. I had hoped for more clear buff. I'm guessing that they must all be carrying e^b then if mixing the two has brought out such dark chicks. I've got e^b/e^b happening, correct?
I suppose that is the risk when you try to get them as dark as possible. I'll switch out roosters and again and try another round. Perhaps the next round will be clearer. This round is still awfully cute and almost unbearable sweet.
Thanks, Sonoran.
