Oh lol Nope they arent the same. Remember Recessive white is a recessive gene like Lavender, Mottleing, ect and requires two genes to be present. So lets say crossing a Recessive white bird ( lets say its masking black) with a RIR, you wouldnt get any white coloring, it would be like breeding Black to RIR in the first generation . Just like you wouldnt get any Lavender birds in the first generation if you crossed a lav bird to a non lav bird.
Silver is not recessive, so Crossing a Silver roo with a RIR will give pure Silver gened pullets in the first generation.
Some way to tell the difference is if the bird is showing black and white in a pattern, Its Silver ( Ex Silver Laced, Silver Penciled, Silver Quail, Silver Columbian, Delawares, ect...) All of those breeds are guaranteed to only be carrying Silver, and not Dominant or Recessive White.
If a bird is showing Red and White, ( thought these wont work as hens for sexlinks anyway since they will be Gold gened) but if a bird is Red and showing white were black would normally be, then that white is Dominant White becuase Dom white masks black but still lets red through som examples would be ( White tailed Red Sexlinks, Red Pyle, Buff laced, ect...) And exeption to this is Mottling, the white mottling spots can be on any colored bird and it is a form of Recessive White.
Then most Solid White birds are Recessive white. Recessive white maskes everything, black and red. Leaving the bird solid white. But White Leghorns, Games, and Cornish Cross birds are solid white, but the majority of these are Dominant White and generally dont carry the Silver genes.
RIWs I believe should be a Silver columbian bird and the Black Columbian markings have been masked by Dominant white, So it this case the bird is carrying both Dom white and Silver
The White Rocks that can make sexlinks are examples of a bird that is carrying both Silver and Recessive white.
As for where I learned it all, mainly since I have been here on BYC. And I have a photographic memory and it makes it really easy for me to pick up on all this stuff when I see the information. But really, once you learn the basics and know what works with what, a LOT of it is just intuitive that can be figured up mentally if you know what genes you are dealing with and how they work.
Tims sticky is about as good as it can get but I do realize it can be pretty mind boggling for someone just starting to learn.

I still havent done Sexlinkage and explaining Gold and Silver inverses yet, but maybe eventually. But I would like to work more on that thread and see if we can get it made into a sticky so I could post a link to that thread for explaination instead of typing it all out everytime becuase sometimes I forget what I've already wrote where and leave out important points and if I could just do one big master post that I could refer to, that would help.
