So these showed up 2 days ago killed 4 quail so I sprayed vinella like I read and no better came home to 70 dead quail after work so if u c these bugs get your birds indoors cause I try everything today and nothing works at all

These are know as Black flies here. I did not know that they could kill quail! I know that they bite like the dickens's and we get them here. Looking forward to reading more about this.

I wasn't aware that these could kill quail either, but these are such nasty flies that HURT when they bite, so I guess it's not too surprising that they could do more harm to a smaller animal. We have a local alpaca farm near us, and the owner has to dip her alpacas in a bath solution to keep these things off her animals. Really sorry to hear that you have lost so many quail from these buggers.

I no I'm in a all out wore here they killed almost all my breader quail I saved 10 hens that are inside now I can even leave my dogs in the kennel during the day so they have been staying on the couch lol I've tryd a lot of diff sprays and powders bit nothing works I can't stay outside long with out getting ate I have welps from head to toe

check on the chicken boards as they sometimes have trouble with fly's. I know you can google homemade or safe fly traps and get lots of info. good luck.

That just absolutely sucks. Yours hatched the same time as mine. Can't imagine it. Anyway, somebody posted this link on a thread pertaining to ducks. I'm moving my quail to an enclosed porch tonight, so I will be going out and getting some fly paper to hang near the door.
Edited to add: I went back and read more of the thread and another person on that thread said the following: ... to soak cotton balls with abstract of vanilla and tie the cotton balls on strings and
hang in several places in the loft.I did that and no more gnats after about a day. keep the cotton balls wet with the vanilla."

OK I will deff try that mine r in the shop still in a pen that's a little small for them but they r still getting along its horrible outside big black clouds of those things everywere
