Sounds to me like either your coop or your mama hen is infested with mites.
It probably won't hurt if you only use the smallest, tiniest amount of DE on the chick's head, but use caution when doing so. Too much DE can irritate the lungs. If you don't feel comforatable doing that, you can also use garlic powder. Might not work quite as well, but it will at least keep them at bay.
Best of luck!
My mama hen isn't infested turns out, but the chick is heavily infested. I'm worried that since it's a newborn that the infestation might be too much for it to handle.

Do you keep having to apply it or is it a one and done deal?
It's a according to how bad they are. Squirt under wings, chest, butt, top of head..cover eyes, back, and wirks great on legs if they're infected. Just a squirt. Check later..if needed do it again. Nice thing about this is the use of it on hens. Don't have to wait to eat eggs.

Baby..squirt some on your fingers..rub on the areas you see bugs. Wash your hands good after. 😜

The chick is infested with these lice (and it is grossing me out 🤢🤮) and I hope it's able to handle it. Do lice suck blood? Is the newborn chick going to be okay?

Where do you think the chick got them from?
Well, there were wild birds living in the roof of the coop so it's probably from them. All of my hens lay eggs in that coop so I don't know why none have got it and only the newborn has got it. Mama hen doesn't even have them.

Depending on what bug you have it is not usually contained to one bird. Have you looked at your hen's vent area between legs and under wings really well? Hard to believe mother hen has non with newborn chicks being infested.
