Hello, hello! I've been lurking and reading on this forum for ages so I'm excited to introduce myself but first, I owe everyone on here a big THANK YOU for all of the help you've unknowingly already given me! I've been reading and learning for well over a year already as I've been navigating the bumps & bruises of being a new chicken owner and lover...
I'll jump right in and answer the sample questions!
(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?
I would definitely still consider myself new to chicken owning! I finally talked my husband into chickens in the Spring of 2022. We got 3 chicks from TSC - a Rhode Island Red, a Calico Princess, and a Buff Orpington. We had NO idea what we were doing or what we were into but OH was I excited! We brought them hope along with one of those tiny little chicken coops that the store sold, which we would later come to learn was far too small for both our new friends and our chicken dreams. We would later expand both our flock and our coop by quite a bit but... baby steps!
(2) How many chickens do you have right now?
We are now up to 8! Chicken math, you know...
(3) What breeds do you have?
If what I have been told is correct, because I'm definitely not an expert, we have:
(5) What are some of your other hobbies?
I like to tell people that, despite the fact that I'm in my early thirties, my aesthetic is very much giving grandma-core lately. I'm very into gardening, cooking, meal-prepping, reading, yoga, and crafting. I love taking excessively long walks with my dog. However, I'm also heavily tattooed and ride a motorcycle. Life is all about balance, you know?
(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share.
In addition to our feathered family, we also have 3 cats and a dog. The dog gets along great with the chickens! She is respectful and kind to them, albeit possibly a little bit afraid of our top hen. The cats watch from inside the house - we're pretty sure they are confused as to why the giant dinosaurs roam the backyard uninterrupted.
(7) Bonus: How did you find BYC, how long have you known about BYC, and what made you finally join our awesome community?
As I said initially, I've been lurking and reading and learning for a long time! I decided to finally join because, unfortunately, we are currently treating a bout of illness in our little ones and I came looking for some expert advice. I've posted and attempted to connect a bit on some of the subreddits on Reddit but have found that community to be a bit on the... unforgiving side sometimes. I have found a ton of great information on here and thought this might be a good place to connect with likeminded individuals who love chickens as much as I have come to. Looking forward to getting to know everyone and their birdos!

If what I have been told is correct, because I'm definitely not an expert, we have:
- 1 Rhode island red hen
- 1 Delaware hen
- 1 tiny little silkie hen
- 1 silkie rooster
- 1 cream legbar hen
- 2 pretty gray hens whose breed I'm unsure of? I'd actually love some insight here if anyone wants to weigh in
- 1 prairie bluebell hen - this one sometimes still looks a bit like a rooster to me but I'm hoping she'll lay her first egg any day now and will put my paranoid suspicions to rest
