Why can't they free-range if they have a secure run to go back to when necessary and at dusk etc?

Hawks. Owls. Eagles. Anything that flies that eats meat...let me rephrase that. Anything that eats meat wants to eat your chickens. I lost one to a hawk by being too trusting of their ability to run and hide and watch for danger.
