Building a ramp.

Here's a pic and some height numbers of my pop door, 'porch' and ramp.
Ramp is 56" long and hinged to porch.
Porch is about 16x14.

Wanted to add this pic to show why ramp is at a right angle.
Foyer! Old slider panels used as a wind break,
pop door faces west from where wicked winter winds come.

Will a big height for jumping really work for little chicks? We haven't used a ramp so far, but I was planning to build one soon, since we have chicks in the coop and I'd like to get them integrated, but I'm worried about letting them out without a way to jump back in. I was assuming a ramp would be necessary.

I used a 2 x 8 board and zig-zigged some rope for traction. 6 years later it's holding up fine. This photo was when it was new.

I remember this one!
Thought it was clever but might be hard to clean,
especially here where the snow would make a real mess of it.
Can you post a current pic?

Just for giggles, here's something to think about:
I also use a 2x6...maybe 2x8...ramp up to the pop door 4' above ground. I put it up in the morning & take it down in the evening; I feel the birds are safer that way. Even if a coon or possum managed to climb the legs of the platform the coop sits on, there's nothing for them to stand on while they work at getting the door open.

On the other hand, my other coop has a small porch (I mistakenly situated the pop door to the side & had no room for the ramp ). The ramp's never moved, and nary a problem.
