Building a roo bachelor pad

Good looking roo pad!!! I'm starting one myself now. I slid the boat over under the shelter to make room to put half of a 10x20 dog kennel under it. The kennel will be completely wrapped in hardware cloth. I have also acquired another truck van body for the coop. I haven't made up my mind on using that or building a coop. I will be housing about 20 heritage RIR roos in it until they are old enough to tell which ones I want to use for breeding. They are only 5wks old right now but I've really gotten attached to them. The girls will be divided up between the other two coops/runs. My feed man sure is gonna love me having 50 birds with healthy appetites to feed.

It does seem lately that there are more folks keeping their roos and providing them a place to stay.

You have 20 roos! And I thought I had it bad. I have never sectioned off my roos before, but I have read a lot of posts from people who have, and I am crossing my fingers that they will be good roomates.

I guess I should show the front of the coop. I just got the top of the dutch door installed before the downpour, so it hasn't been primed yet and looks odd. Again, sorry the pic is lopsided. Good thing my wood cutting ability is better than my picture taking or the guys pad would look like a clowns house, maybe it has to do with the new miter saw I bought for the project. It made things so much faster, I just love it!

Should have bought one years ago.

Your roos get that fancy house??????????

LOL my bachelor pad is 2 cattle panels, some scraps of welded wire, some chicken wire to keep the chickens from walking through the cattle panels, 2 T-posts, everything is held together with zip ties and slap on a couple of tarps for shade!!!!!!!!

If they were raised together and/or are together now they will probably be just fine. They will establish their own pecking order among themselves. Just keep an eye on them though. If you have to remove one from the flock though, you may have a problem reintroducing him back. Good luck!

I'm liking this new coop better than the saltbox one I had delivered about 3 months ago. For a moment I thought maybe I should move the girls in this one and put the boys in the other. This one I have to duck getting in the door but at least I can stand up in it. The other ones ceiling is a bit low, even for me, and I'm short. It also has better construction. I used 2x4s for this one, the other is made from the walls up with 2x3s. However, my other one is already set up with nest boxes, so I guiess I will leave the girls in there.

Dang, man....I thought mine was pretty neat until I saw yours. I definitely won't let my boys see this one!! Very nice....

Only 2 of my boys get along so they had to be completely separated and I chose the one in the pic below. There are 4 boys and they rotate in with the girls so they all get a turn. I think it is working to my advantage because sometimes a roo will pick specific girls that he "likes" and breed them almost exclusively. That can make your fertility take a dive. This way all the girls are likely to be bred at least once a week.

I use a freezer and invite all roosters to freezercamp where I can pay a visit every few days for a warm reunion in the oven. Then we have a jolly time of rememberance over a glass of wine.
