Building a run - do i need to cement posts?

Our posts are not cemented in but are dug two feet in. I did frame a footer and used high strength concrete for that footer. Works great to contain the substrate in the run.

My 25x24' attached coop has 12' pressure treated 4x4's set in 3 feet of concrete. It was not 100% necessary, but I built it to last and to be secure. I trenched the perimeter, and buried the 2x4" welded wire fencing 1 foot deep then backfilled the trench. A little more work, but it is stout.

I would not build a 4' wide run, not enough room for a chicken to get away from a higher up chicken. I'd go 8' wide as a minimum. To concrete or not to concrete is up to you either way works if you dig down deep enough. And either way is temporary or permanent as you see fit.

I will agree that 4' wide is pretty darn tight when chicken A is trying to get away from chicken B. I don't think they could even run past without getting a peck.

it would make using a rake or shovel really difficult too since they tend to have 4' handles.
