Building my first coop! - progress thread

Okay, thanks. And what do you think about 6 inches? Way too little or could be enough? Also, will those boards help it be enough?
If that's all that will fit, then it'll have to be enough.
Not sure what boards you are talking about.
One thing that isn't showing on your cadd model, is the rafters on edge with a fasica at the ends of them. Leaving the soffit open(covered with HC) will be better than the openings in the wall that your model shows. Hope you understand fascia and soffit, typical building terms, maybe google them....and take a look at my coop page to see how I covered the soffits with HC.

I live in Florida so no snow here. I rarely close the vents on my coops except for severe weather and hurricanes. We went through a hurricane almost two years ago and all of the coops survived. I did close the windward side. My favorite coop.

I looked up roof overhangs and read about the terms. So those boards I was talking about are indeed the fascia boards. What I was thinking of doing is fascia boards but without soffits. To protect the gaps between the rafters from predators, I was gonna put HC directly over the gaps between them, not across the underside as a soffit. This kind of structure will only exist on the two short walls, where the rafters come out and form an overhang, and one of those walls will not have gaps between the rafters at all since I'll board them up with pieces of board to fit between them (it's the wall facing the neighbors and I don't want extra sound/noise wafting over). The other short wall will have the spaces between the rafters open for venting and with HC over it. Sort of like this:

Now, for the overhang along the long sides, parallel to the rafters, there won't be anything else sticking out besides 6 inches of OSB board (1/2" thick) and the metal roofing on top of it. Do you think that would be sturdy enough on its own, or would it need supports underneath? I want to put my main vents along those long walls, because they'll be more protected - one will be facing the other neighbor's tall retaining wall, and the other will be facing the run, with half of it adjoining the permanent run roofing extending out from the coop. Those vents will be directly under the roof board. Basically the OSB board of the wall won't come all the way up to meet the roof, but will have a 4"-tall (or so?) gap spanning the width of the whole wall. With the gaps between the vertical supports covered with HC. Like this:

On both the short sides and the long sides, I was thinking of attaching (what I now know are called) fascia boards (not shown in my sketches), to hang down and protect the vents, but without a soffit...

Does that sound realistic?

Look up fly rafters for roof overhang parallel to rafters.
..or you could just do this, my 2x8 retro 'fly rafter':

Not sure I'd sacrifice ventilation for neighbors ears, it's not going to make that much difference in sounds carrying. Soffit vents at low and high end will get you the best passive flow.
HC on outside of soffits much easier and more secure.

@aart I didn't know about fly rafters. I've learned a lot on this forum :D Your solution looks great! I wonder if I can simplify it even further and use 5" galvanized corner braces between the overhang and the wall... That might be the easiest solution.

Ehh...probably be fine for snow load and wind sheer, but I wouldn't stand on it.
:lau:eek: Wow aart you're hard core! This whole time I've been planning on just snow and wind, and feeling inadequate in this discussion, and this whole time you've been talking about being able to stand on it :p

Seriously though, if we assume that this is a chicken coop and not a fort, and nobody will be dancing on the roof, do you think my plan is going to hold up?
