Building our Quail Hutch - Update 4/13/09

Looks good!!!!! You inspired me today - I've been out in the garage fixing one of the old rabbit hutches I bought. Getting ready to cut and install the 2x4's to hold the trays. This will be temporary until I can build them a new one like yours. THAT will take a while LOL!!!

You're doing great - can't wait to see more pics!

citalk2much, thanks.

LilRalphieRoosmama, Thank you! I think that is one of my favorite things about BYC. We all can find a lot of inspiration here.

-- We'll see what the weather is supposed to be like tomorrow. It was rather chilly out there working today. But at least it never did rain or snow like the forecast was predicting. Wednesday through Friday looks promising though!!

I'll get more pics up this week as I make more progress. Good luck with your rabbit hutches, and with your new hutch too.

We did get some rain here but late in the day. I finally finished my hutch and got all of the quail moved - I'm pooped! Speaking of poop, the next one I build will be built to fit the pans because I sure can't find pans to fit the cage. I'm going to try a restaurant supply store. 4 lasagna pans would have fit but I only had 3. I went to the grocery store to get a 4th and they didn't have any this big. I must have gotten these at GFS. I ended up getting 4 of the 1/2 sheetcake pans. They fit fine width-wise but I had a 10 inch gap at the end. Fortunately it's just temporary because it looks pretty dumb. They are in the garage so I don't care for now. At least I'll be able to sleep past 4am (that's when the males start crowing)!

Hope the weather improves and you can get back to work on it. Can't wait to see it all done!

I'll check the dollar store first. The restaurant supply store around here is super expensive!

Hah... I really need to paint this hutch. It made a "guest appearance" in the opening of my Egg Survival Competition video .

Pardon the volume issue with my speech. Couldn't get it turned up loud enough. Darned computer. Kept freezing up on me during edits.

Oooh I'll go look at Sam's! Thanks for that tip!!

Hee. Thanks, Nancy! Now I hope that the competition gets some more entries. It's not all about the video as much as it is about the device you make. Someone could make something a lot better than mine!

That looks great! You're going to have some happy birds!! As far as the pans go, you could try a chain restaurant like Shoney's--they buy thing such as lasagna ready-made from Sysco and might have some of the "disposable" pans left over. Maybe talk with the manager and see if s/he would save you a few!

Hey Michigan! It's looking great so far!

I'm using rubbermaid bin lids for my trays, lined with newspaper - although another option my fiance and I discussed was buying the short, long rubbermaid bins and cutting them down to size using a jigsaw. Also briefly considered broiler pans, but they're heavier.

I like the plastic for its ease of cleaning, how light it is, and its reuseability.

Good luck! I can't wait to see it finished!
