building paradise for the birds

well put deb....i have 8 cemanis...not sure how many are going to be good enough to breed if you have been following the forum...then you will understand...im super picky especially when paying alot for a bird..you have high expectations...totally different when getting a two dollar day old...but when you add two zeros after that..you should get something great...anyways...the cemanis are getting big...and the paprika and sunflower seeds to get them darker is what i heard..im sure its a myth but cheap and i feed all my birds the boss sunflower seeds and they have alot better color then most peoples birds that i see...i believe it adds a nice coat of shimmer to them....just my thoughts....as any of you know if you have been here and fed my birds you used sunflower seeds...been super busy today tho...got three pens in the back with a bunch of sand added to them...so glad thats done...and truly a NECESSITY....for anyone raising birds...the sand is so much cleaner...keeps the bugs down...birds are unlikely to get pests...i would recommend sand for everything...even inside coops if you can...even in the brooder its a better pick then chips...just my opinion...sand might be heavy but is super cheap and lasts along way and can be used after soiled in just about anything...i have alot of clay so it works great in the garden....hope this years garden is better then last year....well off to tilling the garden i go...just got a new tiller...it works great..new technology i guess...the tines are not like the normal tiller that spins like a wheel...can really put this in words but just imagine taking two car wheels and setting them flat on the ground and then spin them horizontally....best image i could put in words...lol...well see you soon with some pics.

Even the ones that are less than perfect will still have good genes... I would take a cull in a nanosecond....

I am planning on raising Sumatras here.... eventually .... Not to any SOP though. The ones that survive will be the ones that get to breed. Its a wild wild place here predator wise. The guineas held their own for three years before I started loosing them to predation by then they had to be at least eight years old. So the Sumatras will have to keep up.

I like Sumatras because of their plumage and ability to fly and fly well for long distances (for a chicken... LOL) and the fact that I hear they are legondary broodies. That combination will serve me well because I hope brood Guineas with them.

I am hoping the Guineas will be a money maker for me... Um er bring in enough money to pay for the habit. I plan on eating both on occasion.

Awesome news on your hatch! I have eggs coming...not GFF

I was supposed to get my Spitzhauben shipped today and I got a notification pushing back to next week.
I have had about 6 or 7 shipments from them...never know when and what is coming.

But then again if you have peacocks you should be fine... Guineas are noisy All the time though but they do go to sleep at night. unless a predator is about that wakes one up.

Just five can go off and cause enough noise so that you cannot have a conversation around them. Though I have found they shut up if you make that little soft whistle using your tongue up against the roof of your mouth. Just about all birds will stop and stare at you OR Look up... and listen themselves.

I was asking the local Amish Farmer how he keeps hischickens alive and he said he had a guinea hen...makes so much noise that the predators run away. I have yet to get one...My chickens are loud enough.

I have personally seen my small flock of five escort a coyote off my property screeching and charging at him with their wings up....

You need at least five... for flock protection. Because they "gang up" on what ever offending animal there is.
