Building the Chicken McMansion (Part 3)

Well, I think the coop is just beautiful!

I love how much time and effort you put into building it right....and bombproof!

Nice coop. I'm looking forward to seeing your progress.

Between your coop and the guy with the underground coop, I think you guys could have a flock of 100 lb chickens.

Chopper's a fine lookin' pug! I think our Gus will make a fine chicken herder some day, but in the short run, my money is on the chickens. I have a feeling our boy is going to learn humility the hard way this summer....we shall see just who herds who...

Well! My daughter's boyfriend came over with his truck today, and we went down to the garden center and got a 1/2 yard of sand and filled the pan. The inside of the coop is painted out and I did the touchups today. I need to paint the insides of the nestboxes, and the entire outside of the coop needs topcoat, but I have trim to finish first.

I plan on taking my tamper out there and really packing that sand down firm, and adding more if I need to. I put a 2x4 on top of the 4x4 base, and I want that base completely covered.

As you can see, I have most of the framing done and hanging wire is imminent. I have a few more framing pieces to nail in, the I am going to stain all of the lumber with deck stain. I plan on hanging the hardware cloth with 1" washered galvanized screws.

I plan on hanging the door to the run on the left end 4x4 post, and make it open outward. I'm framing the door in 2x2 lumber and will cover it with the same hardware cloth as the rest of the run will get.

My chick supplier e-mailed me the other day to let me know she only got two chicks our of her first hatch, but that she has another hatch due this weekend or early next week. She will probably have five young'uns for me next week some time next week, and the brooder is ready and waiting. I still have a fair amount of work to do on the coop and run, but it will be ready for the chooks long before they are ready for it.

Onward!

that is a gorgeous coop, i hope you have some really nice chickens going in their, maybe some japanese... i hate it when i see a beautifully built coop with your standard run of the mill chickens. Nice job!

I hate to disappoint you guys, but I have always wanted a flock of Rhode Island Reds, and I'm waiting on the hatch for five of them right now.

I have 1 RIR and she was the first chicken to lay, and she has been giving me about 6 eggs a week. Get the birds you want. What ever you get they sure will have a fancy home. Great job
