I too, noticed a soft round mobile lump on my pullets chests -- does not bother them when palpated. Thought it might be crop, so am glad to seee this topic. my girls have access to feed and water 24/7 so crop is always full. My breeder recommended starter grit even with the starter crumbles, as he is of the opinion that much of their food would pass thru undigested. He is a very well-known and respected breeder, so I trust his judgement, and my girls are thriving!
Besides that lump, they seem VERY happy, loving little girls...and VERY tolerant of my kids...I'm also very proud of my kids for their abilities to be gentle, and respect the birds.
This chicken experience has been great so far!!!
Here are my kids from tonight...you can see the bulge in some of the pics...but I'm convinced now that it's the crop...they just seem too happy, content and healthy otherwise...
...I'm looking forward to the day we can start a little yogurt treat!
My daughter attempted to pick up...we are learning to 'scoop' up, but she thought this method was a better choice!
Luckily a second later she put her down and apparently it didn't really bother "Betty" because she hung out in her lap for some time after that point.
I posted these pics in 'photos' as well...hope that was ok?
