When I charged $20 (I really didn't want to sell chickens as dog food) they were nearly POL and 8 were pullets.
If yours were already laying you have to calculate what you will lose as income till they can be replaced(minus feed cost). Actual loss.

well just discovered that the biggest hen that the dog killed....just started to lay that day my mom found two eggs in the pen yesterday and now there is only one today so now im even madder

when they first start laying, it's common for them to skip a day or 2 between eggs. Also, the scare can affect egg production. Doesn't make it any better for losing the birds. But, she wasn't necessarily the one laying.

In most places a laying hen costs much more than $5. Roosters? depends on size, breed and purpose, but should be more than $5. Count in loss of egg sales from the lost hens from the time of loss until replacement. Sounds to me like you are probably looking at at least a couple of hundred dollars total. Itemize teh loss and present her with a copy. Keep good records of what and when she pays so that if you end up in small claims court you can show exactly what you have and have not received.
