It is good that you charged some money. And the thing is, all were rare in that there was no other being exactly like any of them anywhere on this troubled earth, and they all deserved to live and not be tortured, terrorized and/or killed. So OP, you and your family can help with the paradigm shift so desperately needed when it comes to responsible dog guardianship and you do this by making sure the dog people are charged money for these losses. It will never ever in any way, shape or form compensate for the loss of a treasured life, but it helps shift thinking in the hopes that someday all dog guardians realize they have under their wing a predator and with that comes the solemn responsibility of keeping that predator under their control so that innocent beings don't suffer. There are oodles of threads here on BYC that can help you and your family determine what you might realistically be able to bill the dog's people.

That is frustrating for sure and I feel your pain, we lose a couple it is also very apparent in our egg production as well and like you said there is no way they can replace those birds or the work it took to raise them. Best of luck getting things smoothed out.....

When I charged $20 (I really didn't want to sell chickens as dog food) they were nearly POL and 8 were pullets.
If yours were already laying you have to calculate what you will lose as income till they can be replaced(minus feed cost). Actual loss.

well just discovered that the biggest hen that the dog killed....just started to lay that day my mom found two eggs in the pen yesterday and now there is only one today so now im even madder

when they first start laying, it's common for them to skip a day or 2 between eggs. Also, the scare can affect egg production. Doesn't make it any better for losing the birds. But, she wasn't necessarily the one laying.

In most places a laying hen costs much more than $5. Roosters? depends on size, breed and purpose, but should be more than $5. Count in loss of egg sales from the lost hens from the time of loss until replacement. Sounds to me like you are probably looking at at least a couple of hundred dollars total. Itemize teh loss and present her with a copy. Keep good records of what and when she pays so that if you end up in small claims court you can show exactly what you have and have not received.
