Bully Chicken and Reintegration

Hello,

The chickens did well with free range again today so I decided to try putting them in the coop together. It was going well at first, but within 5 minutes, two out of the three chickens decided to attack the Delaware and even drew blood on the comb. I pulled her out as quickly as possible and she is now separated while still being able to see the rest of the flock as the Delaware now needs to recover from her new injuries. Where do I go from here? Continue to let them free range together until they become friends? I would take the advice and separate the bully but now there seems to be two bullies.

Thank you in advance for the help.

Hi there,

I had issues integrating my chickens together as well. It may be a little harder for you because you are only adding one new one to the bunch, so they can target just one... if that makes sense? I had to leave my new chickens in a dog-crate for a few days so that they could all see each other, but not harm one another. After a few days, I added the new girls at night so that when they woke, they didn't realize and went on with their day.

Do not get me wrong!, it took a few good pecks and chasing to get it out of their systems :) Good Luck!

Another thing that helped was adding extra waterers and food containers...the original flock becomes territorial over their food and water!

:)

I am okay with using the pinless peppers but I don't know which chicken to put it on!

When free ranging the black chicken is top hep and the one doing the pecking, however hers seems normal. The Delaware now just allows the black chicken to get on top of her and then the pecking stops. While free ranging the brown chicken could care less about the Delaware. There have also been multiple times when the chickens are all in the coop with the doors open and all the chickens are getting along. However, as soon as I put them into coop and close it, the brown chicken starts to attack which gets the black one going as well. So which chicken would I put the pinless peppers on? Would putting the pinless peppers on stress out the chicken and in turn stop my egg production? I just got my first egg from the brown chicken and I don't want to stop my momentum.

Or would it be better to place either the brown or black chickens in a cage inside the coop to prevent attacks? I want to do whatever will cause the least amount of stress to the chickens to avoid losing eggs.

I heard sometimes if you remove the bully for a few days, when they return they have to restructure their pecking order, therefore making the "bullying" stop. That was going to be my next choice if the girls wouldn't shape up :)
