Bumble Foot advice

One of my chickens was diagnosed (by photo) with very early bumble foot (both feet). My friend is a non-practicing vet who has her own chickens. We were told to soak the feet in soapy water, and then use neosporin, and wrap with gauze and then vet tape and then some breathable bandage tape. We have changed her bandages 3 times, and don't really notice any difference. Last night we happened to be talking to another chicken owner who said we MUST remove the kernel or it won't heal. We read the most informative article in this forum about how to do this, but we only want to if it's necessary. I am posting a couple of pictures, realizing they are not apples and apples. The top picture is when I first noticed it, and the bottom was taken 3 days ago. Today we are either changing out the bandages OR doing surgery and then changing out the bandages. I would really appreciate some opinions! Also, has anyone tried Prid's Drawing Salve? Thanks in advance.

A few days isn't long enough. I find it takes weeks.

That said, this doesn't look bad yet. Have you removed the scab yet? You might be able to squeeze out the infection, but just opening the scab and packing it with antibiotic for a week or two might do the trick.

Thank you! No, we have not removed the scab. Have you ever used Prid's Drawing Salve?

I believe so. You can search this site for it and see what others have said. Whatever you use, I wouldn't expect a quick resolution. But if you find something the does work quickly, be sure to share! This is a common problem in chickens. You'd be helping!
😄
Update: I'm finding lots of good reviews. I'm going to try it and keep watching. Supposedly, if it works, you can pull the plug out with the fingers.

@lmterp I have used PRID. Yes it works very well but it takes more than a few days to resolve.
Two things first. I think your case will resolve relatively quickly as it appears small. Catching it before it gets big is a really good thing because it can take many months.
Second let me start by telling you that when I discovered my first bumblefoot I followed online YouTube instructions and performed surgery to remove it. It was quite a large scab. I’m still working on it 10 months later. It’s finally working since using PRID.
Ok so when I found a couple more chickens with bumblefooti knew I had to find a better way. That’s how I found PRID.
I’ve found PRID does a great job of softening the scab so it can be removed. I start by washing the foot with warm water and soap. I do this in my bathroom sink. Then I fill the sink about 3-4 inches with very warm water and tablespoon or more of Epsom salts, I’ve never measured. I soak the foot till the water almost cold. And yes, I scrub the sink after🤪. While soaking I intermittently rub the scab with my finger and my fingernail to remove softened bits. You can try squeezing or tugging on the scab if it loosens enough. Then I dry the foot. Hubby holds the bird while I dress it. I have gauze pads that I cut in strips. I also have vetwrap that I cut in strips. First I apply a lump of PRID to the gauze, then place the PRID against the scab as I fit the strip wrapped along the palm and up between toes. Then that gets covered in a vetwrap strip. I use more strips to wrap the opposite direction between toes and around the ankle to anchor it. No need for tape. This makes a sort of shoe to protect the foot. I do this every night but as it gets closer to being healed I might do it every other night.
Don’t get overwhelmed by my terrible descriptions. I’ll try to get pictures but might need to wait till hubby gets home.
The PRID will soften and draw. If the wound isn’t bad it may only be the scab that comes away. If it’s more advanced it may very well pop out when you’re pulling on or squeezing the scab.

Thank you SO much for this! We've done the whole wrapping routine with neosporin, so we will just sub the PRID. However, we have NOT, until now, soaked and cleaned and re-bandaged every night! And it's been WET here!

Ah ok! So you don’t need pictures to wrap. 😅👍🏻
Yes is been wet AND cold here lately. Naturally I have a towel handy. I also have my hair dryer ready to go. And as I’ve gotten better at handling this situation I’ve gotten better at not soaking the entire bird! Oh my how wet they were when I first started this stuff! 😫🥶 And birds with feathered feet pose an additional problem. 😝
Let us know how it goes. 🙂
