Bumble foot. :(

Hey y’all.
I need some tips on how to prevent bumble foot. My poor Peking girl has it so bad again and I feel awful. Also one of my runners girls have it as well. I took them both to the vet yesterday (which we saw a different vet in the same clinic) she made me feel as if it was my fault they are getting bumble foot.
my girls are out most of the day. From about 6:30am - 9:30pm they walk on grass, rocks, sand and concrete. Mostly grass and sand though.
Their bedding is pine shavings and the rest of the pin is sand. (I’ve heard it makes it easier the clean up their poop) which it has been. But I’m willing to change if sand isn’t good for their feet.

What do you y’all put down in your ducks pins?

Do you put anything on their feet to help them not dry out?

Thoughts on duck shoes? Do you have them wear them all the time? I have 4 girls two runner a Peking and a mallard. So I’d be so willing to make them for all 4 of them.

Give me all your tips. I’m willing to try anything. As the meds and vet bills are killing me and I’d rather spend that money on improving their home and keeping bumble foot away.

Hey I took my Runner to the vet with a bumble like I’d never seen and she did the same said it was my husbandry. I live in the mountains rocks galore have had ducks since 2004 and this was my first case of bumble on one of my ducks in 2019. We do the best we can. Mine are on dirt rocks and spent shavings to help with mud. They have a little over a half acre to forage on. Can’t wear shoes on them all the time especially if they get wet I’d think that would break down their skin. What did the vet do and did she give meds. A picture of these bumble too please.

hi, i recommend adding extra brewers yeast to their daily diet. it should help make their feet as strong as possible

also, is the place with that their nighttime coop? i recommend making it much more predator proof as many animals can grab the ducks through that

We use to let our ducks free range (Pekins) on 1-2 acres but finally had to stop because the females kept getting bumblefoot. So we let them out for about 45 minutes in the morning and then keep them in a 50’x50’ enclosed pen. They were free ranging on grass/dirt/ gravel. Ive read that Pekins aren’t suppose to be walking all the time b/c they are so heavy and their legs aren’t built for this. We haven’t had any problems since. Now they swim, nap, and eat.

do you have a pool where they can take the weight off their legs during the day?

Oh my goodness. It’s weird that they would put the blame on us. Hmm.
Okay I’ll put down some more pine shavings. Maybe it will be softer on their feet. The vet wants to do surgery. I pushed it back a week though because I’ve been soaking them twice a day for about 20 minutes. I then dry their feet and spray Theracyn on the them. I let that air dry and then put Green Goo Natural Herbal Salve on with some gauze and then I wrap them.

Here are some pictures from yesterday. This morning they look better and I can see the yellow infection starting to draw out! I’m hoping in the next few days it comes completely out. Crossing my fingers. I’ll take more pictures tonight when I take the wraps off and put her on the patio away from the other girls and let her feet be free for a few hours before I soak and wrap them again.

Thank you so much for this information. I didn’t know this about Pekins. I do notice that she does like to find a nice shaded area on the grass to take naps. Sometimes even staying put when the others move on. She is seriously the sweetest most sassy girl. Loves to talk to me when she hears me come outside. I do have a pool for them. She has a crooked neck though and doesn’t swim for long periods. She does love to swim though. It just melts my heart that she finally has the confidence to do so. You can see their pool above. There are steps on the inside that I have for her to stand on when she gets tired as she does have to work a little harder to swim.

Perfect thank you for the advice. I will definitely get some today and add it there food. That’s great. Yes that is the pin they are in at night. I do have boards I put up at night. Is this an avian vet? What drugs does she have her on?

I'm worried by the looks of the Bumble, that the infection is spreading up her legs possibly causing osteomyelitis.
