She is not using her right foot, is hopping. When I looked, she has a big swollen 'knot'on the bottom, where her toes all meet up. I put blue-kote and when it dried put a triple antibiotic ointment. I'm sure these won't help, I didn't see any broken skin. Can I use sulmet for this? Or do I need to lance it? I can probably 'man up' enough to pull it off, but what then? Help!! I know I can count on you chicken lovers to help me solve this problem. Thanks, Donna

Sounds like you need to lance it and clean it out.
I did it and then just wrapped with Vet Wrap. Chicken was fine after that.
Two weeks later a hawk got her.

That's what I was afraid of! lol
And, we are not going above freezing for a wk or so here,
I hate to leave her w/ a wound.
Is it an infection that can be resolved w/ a med, do you know?
Thanks!! Donna

Can you post a pic so we can confirm it is indeed bumblefoot? Sulmet is not used for this condition, which is a staph infection typically caused by an injury to the foot. When I had a hen with bumblefoot, we worked the plug out and cleaned the cheesy material out, then followed a with a course of a week of Pen G injectible antibiotic injections to prevent infection and daily cleansing. I did not wrap and my hen healed fine.

Search bumblefoot. There is a lot of information about soaking and lancing and what to do and how to do it.

Yes, do the search. Someone took the time to really explain the surgery and post pics. You can't go wrong if you follow their advice. I recommend bringing the chicken indoors for a few days after the surgery, since it is so cold. Good luck!
