Bumblefoot abcess

We have a hen that we will be doing foot surgery on. Her foot is swollen and she has a large abcess on the top that is showing white spots thru the skin. I'm not sure if we should open the abcess and drain or if we should only open the bottom of the injured foot and clean it out.

Sounds like you will have to clean from the top, and if there is a scab on the bottom of her foot, you should also remove that and clean from the bottom, to make sure you have removed all of the infection in her foot. I've seen posts on here where folks have had to clean both areas, and the surgery went well for them. Good luck to you.
