Bumblefoot? And missing toenail?

Update: She is home and doing so well Walks great. Loves her peas!!! Eating them like crazy! Definitely has her appetite! Her foot is bandaged and will be changed in 3 days at the vets office and then probably taken off 3 days after that at the vets but may be bandaged again depending on the healing process. On antibiotic Doxycyline 100mg tablets given 1/2 tablet twice/day for 14 days and Rimadyl 25mg tablets given 1/2 tabled twice a day for 7 days for pain.

Need advice. Hoover is doing well. Vet said her foot was healing very well on Sat when we went in for a bandage change. Her other foot started to show some issues so he wrapped that one up too with a little extra cushion. Both bandages were taken off yesterday Amputated toe looks great!

A couple of days before her bandage change on Sat she started sitting on her and her rehab buddies eggs and not wanting to come out of the duck house. We usually take eggs out every morning but started leaving them thinking that if she was going broody at least she would be still and resting letting her foot heal. She doesn't come out for much. She stays inside pretty much all day. She will usually come out for a bowl of treats (peas, kale, tomatoes, watermelon, dandelions) but I haven't seen her eat pellets or forage at all. She seems to be walking just fine. Doesn't look like she is in pain. Pain pills ended 2 days ago.

She has 8 eggs under her now. Do you think she has just gone broody? Should I take the eggs away to see if she will move around more? Or will that just stress her out and depress her? Should I just leave her alone as long she comes out for treats?

Sounds broody. Not a bad thing, in my opinion.

I would let her sit on some duds - or ceramic or wooden eggs if you can get them, since real egg duds can eventually rot and burst. ick

The thing I watch most with my broodies is that they get enough to eat. I also work a little DE into the bottom of the nest, and put a little extra bedding on top of that, to discourage bugs.

My broodies generally take two breaks a day from the nest, and that's when I do my work - check eggs to make sure none smells suspicious (if they do, I chuck them), make sure no bugs are present, and be sure that the broody gets at plenty of food in the brief time she's off the nest. I put food and fresh water nearby, too.

They are vulnerable on the nest, so I make sure the nest is in a safe place. For ours, they have always started nesting in the night shelter. Very convenient.

I was not expecting this!!!

Their eggs are viable!! Candled a few days ago (I think it was around 16 days in) and they all have strong and obvious veining. Which again thanks to this site I had an idea of what to look for! There are 7 of them. They kicked the 8th one out a while ago so it was thrown away. Hoover and Wendy are both sharing the mixed egg nest. Elsa (also being treated for bumble foot) hangs out with them but doesn't really sit the nest. No one is laying, not even Elsa. Elsa hasn't laid since June 1st. Maybe this is typical when 2 of 3 have gone broody. I have no idea as this is my first time ever with broody duckies.

I'm so shocked! I naively didn't think it was possible that their eggs to be fertile since they had been separated for at least a couple of weeks from the flock while in rehab. Stupid me. I didn't know better. I kept checking them to make sure they weren't smelling like you suggested @Amiga (I don't know why that's not turning blue to link). I was planning on replacing them with fakes but thought on the off chance I'd candle them first. Glad I did! We have been planning on adding to the flock to have a total of 15 so this works out perfectly numbers wise if they actually hatch. So nervous about getting boys though. I'm going to fall in love and from what I can tell it is very difficult to rehome boys.

I'm guessing this is going to be a hatch over a weeks time period since I began letting them sit from day one and they built the clutch as they went. So now it is duckling hatching by momma ducks learning and cramming info time!

So anyways just wanted to give an update on Hoovers recovery from surgery. Hoover is doing great with her amputated toe. No limping and gets around fabulously (when she comes off the nest anyways). Moody and broody! Eats, drinks and takes 2-3 breaks a day.
