bumblefoot diagnosis...

Not many ducks even those we've cuddled from tiny ducklings like to be held once they are adults. but I go ahead and do it anyway because it's the only way to treat at times. Don't worry if they get upset and want down but try at least 5 minute soaks with the warm water and epsom salt. even a couple times a day if you can but 1X will help. I use a 1 gallon bucket fill half way with warm water place 1 cup of Epsom salt I like it to be strong to do the job. then I pick up duck [most of the time I have to walk behind them into their house to pick them up] Place both feet into bucket much easier to do both. Then I sit and hold them for at least 5 mins. get them out and dry their feet then apply colorless iodine or ointment but I do this procedure right before bedtime so they go right into their house and not walking around picking up nasties again.
It's not an over night fix like Amiga said but if you work at it you can get it cleared up.
I don't know why, but this works with our ducks: When we first trained our ducks to go into their house, the stragglers that didn't make it got "flipped" then put in their house manually. By flipped, I mean if you grab the duck with your fingers over each wing wrapping toward their chest and your thumbs behind its back pointing to the base of the duck's neck then raise your arms bending at the elbows so that the duck ends up upside down, feed in the air and its head on its own chest. I did this because I wanted them to know it was better to go in on their own. To my surprise, my ducks all relax now in this position and it makes it easy to get to their feet. What is really funny is most of them rest their faces against my cheek when I do this... So once / week, we examine all the feet as part of a meal worm treat. I grab a duck and flip it, and my wife inspects their feet, then on to the next duck. We can check and treat all 12 ducks in about 8 minutes. We paint every little scrape or tiny scab with clear iodine (with a small paint brush) and most go away. If they get worse then that duck goes on the daily treatment plan. Pretty much this is always Tella and only Tella (she must hate her feet), but so far, we have kept them walking without problems. And this is with my flock... You know how I know there is a new Canadian thistle in the yard??? All my ducks are hopping on it

Kaine is the funniest: He bicycles for 3-4 strokes then uses his left foot only for 2-3 more strokes while slowing to 1/3 speed then he lays there calmly and puts his bill on my cheek.... EVERY time!
