I have just discovered that all my hens have bumblefoot. They are 1 y/o RI Reds and are free-ranging on our horse farm during the day and in a stall at night. One hen had to be euthanized over the weekend due to extreme lethargy and diarrhea. She had been on oral antibiotics for the bumblefoot for the previous 10 days. One hen has it in her foot pad on one foot and her toe on the other foot (foot pad scab was small with no swelling, toe scab was bigger with some swelling). I have soaked and removed the scabs and plugs on those feet and have her feet wrapped. I am not giving her oral antibiotics at this time. The other hen has just two tiny scabs starting on both foot pads. Help!!! WHY are they getting this infection? I've read a lot about how to treat the condition but cannot find much information on how to prevent it!!! Thank you!! Lucy
