ok so a few weeks ago i saw that my friends chicken had a small bump in between her middle toe and her other toe on both sides.it seems its painfull for her to walk.i dont know how to treat it or if its heraditary or if its and ucler. she is a rhode island red if that helps any. and she is a rescue. i just want to know if its treatable and how to treat it,anything would be great thank you very much for your time and advice.

Pick up this chicken and examine the bottom of her feet....in the area you describe are~usually very tiny and unable to be seen~glands that can become impacted. Particularly if they have been kept in poor living conditions in which they are walking around on their own feces quite a bit.

You can spread this foot apart and dig the debris out of those glands and clean them out with a Q-Tip. I'd also pour some peroxide in them to boil out any other things you cannot reach.

I would then soak these feet in some warm epsom salt water for a length of time to soothe the inflamed tissue around the glands.

Then place antibiotic ointment up in these glands and pack it with the cotton from the heads of Q-tips to keep any further debris from getting in. Place some of the antibiotic ointment on the outside of this packing to seal out moisture from getting into the cotton.

Change out that packing frequently and keep the glands cleaned out from debris. Slowly these glands will decrease in size and won't be able to hold as much debris but they will always need to be checked and cleaned out on occasion to prevent further infection.

Here's a pic of one such impacted gland....
