I need some advice, please! We have a 5 year old hen, Ringo, who is limping. She is hanging out next to the coop instead of free-ranging. She seems to be eating and drinking normally. She is limping and I noticed one of her toes looks different. Is this what bumblefoot looks like? I have never encountered it before and not sure if it can effect one toe like this. If it is bumblefoot, I will attempt to treat it at home. If not, I will take her to the vet. What would you do?

It is possible to get bumblefoot on the toes, but it could also be something like a sprain or strain of some sort. It’s hard to tell without seeing more of the foot. Could you check the bottom of her foot and pads of the toes and post pictures if possible?

Basically anywhere there is a scrape or cut there is a chance for bacteria to enter the foot and cause bumblefoot.

Turn her foot over and look at the undersides. Bumblefoot often reveals itself as a hard core surrounded by swelling - much like a very large blackhead or hard pimple.

I don’t see anything that screams bumblefoot, but the toe does look swollen. Check in the crevices and bends of that toe and the big fold right where the toe meets the pad in the center of her foot. Also check that no string or anything is wrapped around that toe. Do you see anything jammed up around the nail?

It would not hurt to do a foot soak once or twice a day in an Epsom salt bath if you can’t see anything obvious causing the issue. She may have injured it somehow and swelling is a result of that and not bumblefoot.

If you are able, more clear, well lit pictures from a bunch of different angles and of all the crevices could help. There are some really observant people here that might see something. I know they’re hard to get to cooperate for pictures, though, so no pressure if you can’t get anymore.
