bumblefoot surgery doesnt appear to be working, and almost killed one!

For a long time I did not keep her apart, and none of the other flock got it. I am not sure if she stepped on a sticker or what - we have a lot of nasty stickery plants here in the desert. The only reason I keep her apart now, she cannot "get away" quick enough from young cockerels - plus she likes the individual attention from me - silly girl. She has a bird cage in the coop she sleeps in at night and a run all to herself during the day - she can see all the other chickens just cannot get to them or the cockerels to her

I eat her eggs - there is nothing wrong with them - as long as you are not giving her antibiotics.

I have read alot about it, and the bird needs a wound on their foot for the infection to enter - seems to be the way a bird gets bumblefoot.

Thanks ParadiseFoundFarm, this makes me feel a little better, that yours didnt look like it would heal either for a while. Ok, so I guess Ill just keep soaking, and cleaning, and all that, and see how it goes.

I am certainly no expert either. However I too didn't find anything in their coop so I assume it was from jumping off the ladder rather then walking to the bottom (the ladder extends from the ground to the poop board/roost). They would walk about half way down the ladder then jump to the floor. My girls are big brahmas and I think I read that jumping can cause bumble foot too. I had a successful "surgery" however I wanted to recommend that next time you have uncontrolled bleeding, apply cornstarch, it will help control the bleeding. Good luck.
