Bumblefoot surgery first time Pg 1 SECOND TIME!!!! PG 3 GRAPHIC

Another thought, I wonder if there is something still up there besides infection, i.e. a foreign body. I would think another course of antibiotics to get the infection out combined with soaking and you might be able to work it out...

Ok, IMO, I would cut open the red pussy area, (not the healthy tissue cause that is what will cause the bleeding again).
massage the surroundging area B4 and after you cut it open. Press from outer corners to the opening to push out the pus and plug that might be there, sometimes a tweezer is needed to help pull it out.

The I would soak her foot in WARM EPSOM SALT water for 10-15 Every day (the epsome salt will help draw out the infection and dry it out). Then cleanse the surrounding area with the iodine. pack with triple antibiotic ointment and wrap it back up.

Keep her on the antibiotics for a much longer course. You can also call a Vet and get the injectable through them!

Make her a wet mash of scrambled eggs, butter milk and a few drops of poly-v-sol vitamins (WITHOUT iron).
Feed that to her DAILY to help with extra protein and vitamins...you can also put electrolytes in her water if you want to.

Hope this helps,

Laura

I am dealing with the tail end of having two hens with bumble foot and I will tell you what worked wonders for me. First, I got Tricide-Neo powder from this place: https://www.pondrx.com/product.php?productid=16166 and soaked the hens foot in it every day to every other day as it began to heal. I did not have to open them except for one that was on the very front of the toes, between them, and when I did puss came oozing out. Once I soaked their feet for about 5 to 10 minutes, I dried their foot off, then slathered the area with a generous dollop of triple antibiotic ointment, put a small piece of cotton on that, then wrap the cotton ball onto the foot with a strip of vet wrap, but not too tightly done, so the cotton ball keeps the triple antibiotic ointment on the wound so it can soak in and further fight the infection. You have to be diligent with the care and cleanliness but the tricide-neo, while for koa fish, does work wonders, and often times without surgery, other than initially opening the hole or pulling the little scabby plug.

Tricide-neo works by soaking into the site and destroying the bacteria and bad stuff, it is often used on other raptors in aviary rescue places with great success too.

Be VERY careful with PenG as penicillin can cause major damage and/or death should you not get the dose exactly right or inject it in the wrong area. Our vet put my little hen who had it the worst on amoxicillin and we looked up the dose after weighing her and i got her to eat it by putting it over scrambled eggs or on a few pieces of broken day old bread and it would soak up the liquid then she would gobble it all down.

Great idea to give your hen scrambled eggs or anything else that may give her extra energy. I actually went to my small animal vet and discussed the above and she gave me the green light, as she does not like to open any animals body unless it is absolutely necessary. This has worked wonders. I too do not like to open anything, as it can, it not cleaned properly or done right, cause more damage than good.

Good luck. One note, before cutting and cleaning the foot, I would soak first, this will soften the skin and soften the tissue or plug that you need to get out of there first, lessening the pain and discomfort.

I worked the scab off by soaking in warm water.
how does it look?
I gave her some egg, yogert, honey, and oats she ate all of it.

I think it looks better with the scab off right?

It looks pretty good in that last pic. I also recommend the warm salt water soaks. I also keep on hand at all times "Rawleigh's Salve" in the round yellow tin. It is safe for humans and other animals and has a "drawing out" property to it. I have success with it a lot, especially when the injury/lesion is treated early. I slather it on and wrap it up then check it daily with new soak and new dressing. I do not do the surgery. The "scab" on the foot I believe to be eschar (dead tissue) which results from repeated pressure to the same area. Could be a perching problem. I consider it similar to a bed sore in humans, which is also caused by pressure. Healing begins with removal of the eschar and light debridement of the surrounding area. Others here have differing opinions of course. I just believe chickens feel more pain than some think they do.

Ok, I am going to do the surgery again. I am also going to give her PennG 0.10cc for every lb she is. so shes 6lbs, so thats 0.6cc
wish me luck

Thanks all

I do believe she feels pain, but I am going to do this, so that this bumble foot will not take her life.

Please send prayers

I did it,
I went really well in the beginning. we got the core out, but then I saw some more of it. I had to cut a little more, I cut and she jurked! I cut her real deep, and she started bleeding a ton!!! ;sads
I was so close to getting it all
there is still more in there, but we had to stop and get the bleeding to stop. We used cornstarch, and that REALLY helped to stop the bleeding.

when should I try to get the rest out?
I want to give the deep cut time to heal right?

is it really bad that I cut her so deep? I dident mean to, but I feel horrible

I would keep soaking it just to make sure you got all of the stuff out.
