bumblefoot treatment for 3 yo hen Please help.

I gave her a dose of 3/4 of 1cc of penicillin in the breast.

I soaked the foot, pulled out the black scab/plug. No sign of a "hard kernel looking thing.

I then cut a dime size portion of her pad straight across, it bled like the dickens. I tried to dig it out but it was just bleeding too much, I squeezed and felt around but couldn't get any "kernel looking thing out. It looked all like healthy skin, no pus, nor horrible smell. I just couldn't keep digging anymore. I held it till the bleeding slowed down and wrapped it with Neosporin and Vetwrap.

I pray I got it all but time will tell. I will continue the abx.

I really don't want to do that again

Will sugar help the blood to coagulate? I don't have any bleedstop stuff.

Thank you Janet. No I don't have a photo of beforehand. It was quite swollen but not red or pink. I'll post a picture when I change the dressing tomorrow. I'll see if the swelling has gone down.

I gave her 0.3 mg of Buprenorphine orally for pain. I had it leftover from my kitty when she had surgery. I hope she rests "better" tonight with it.

I didn't use any blood stop. My hen bled like crazy, and it was worrisome for me ,too. I double wrapped, and hoped for the best. She did fine. Scrambled egg, lots of nutrient rich foods, and electrolytes.

Did you get a hard kernel thing out Copper? This is what I'm afraid of. I just couldn't go on digging. I squeezed and manipulated it so much and nothing would be expelled, even though it was swollen. I couldn't see through all the blood. Praying for the best.

7Hensandaroo and haven't lost a one!!!!!!!!!!!!
All Buff O's and just over 3 years old.

I didn't get much out of the bottom. Just liquid white blood cells. I found most of my hens infection was on the top of her foot. I simply sliced a 1 inch hole, and it gushed. When I messaged it, a softened mass of infection came out. I messaged it under a batch of fresh betadine solution, applied pressure and packed with triple antibiotic ointment. It is very hard to see with all the blood. I then put a small non stick gauze pad on it and wrapped it with vet wrap being very careful not to make it tight.

I was also worried that I didn't get it all out, but apparently I did because she is all healed up, laying and happy. :) Did you disinfect your work area with bleach? These infections are almost always staph, so please make sure you do.
