Bumblefoot update, if we cull her is she safe to eat? No systemics.

I have a white leghorn with bumblefoot on both feet. One side's more swollen than the other. It's a grape as opposed to the other side which looks like an edmame bean under her skin.

Anyway, last night I removed both scabs, but nothing else came easily.

Tonight I lanced her foot and got a kernel about the size of a pea in two chunks from the larger swelling. Could that be it? There was too much blood to see what else might be there, so I bandaged her well and put her back in the hospital crate.

I really don't want to have to dig around more on that foot, it seemed like I was cutting so deeply, but it was probably only about an eight to three sixteenths of an inch deep. Do I have to dig deeper?

First, find out what caused it.

In our case we had a shard of wood sticking up out of one of our roosts.

We fixed that!

It took us almost a month with our white rock, digging around in both of her feet almost every other day... but eventually it healed. The mixture of iodine and sugar after placing the antibiotic ointment really worked.

I think she scratched around under the blackberries and hurt her feet that way. She's the only one out of 12 affected.

I tried to help a hen with bumblefoot last night. This morning she's much worse and not taking weight on that foot.

We've given her not systemic antibiotics, is she safe to eat?

Please no arguments or judgments about our decision. I can't put the time into doctoring her and healing her at this point.

Thanks.

ETA, this was discovered on Wednesday and is progressing rapidly.

I don't know if she would be safe to eat because she is dying from an infection. Personally I don't think I would but that is just me.

Took courage for you to ask your question. GOOD FOR YOU! I'm not here to judge just learn and see what other folks have to say about care, feeding etc. Sometimes I've wanted to post a question but thought better of it because I really don't want to be 'yelled' at or told 'this is how it is period'!

I think that if people don't like the question they should skip it and go on to one they do like.

I wish I had an answer for you. Sorry you are loosing one.

Take care.

Its a staph infection which is dangerous and can become antibiotic resistant. I wouldnt eat her...just my personal opinion, and tho I dont do it, I have nothing against people who do....I just like my meat to be stranger irds, and not ones I know...but at this point I only eat birds that have been free range or at least cagless and organically raised....tho I dontk now how farms keep big meat flocks without giving them some medicines...

It's very likely a staph or ecoli infection. This can be transmitted to humans. It is NOT safe to process a bird with bumblefoot for meat.

Good heavens, you are not going to eat the bird raw. Cooking will kill any bacteria. How could eating the chicken possibly hurt you?
