Bumblefoot

One of my chickens has bumblefoot and we took out the core a few weeks ago. I was wondering how long it will take until we start to see the inflammation go down?

What are you doing for treatment?

After removing the core it is good to put Vetericyn wound care and/or Neosporin on the area and wrap it with vet wrap to keep it clean. You can soak the foot in Epsom Salts to help with swelling then reapply Neosporin and wrap again. Not sure how long it will take as it depends on how bad it was to begin with. Bumblefoot is a staph infection, is very serious, and can spread to other tissue and bones.

Most of the time Bumblefoot is successfully treated with nothing more than home care (removing core, soaking, Neosporin, wrap). If the infection is/was severe then in some cases antibiotics may be necessary.

Try soaking first with the Epsom Salts and monitor it before deciding if antibiotics are needed.

We gave her the treatment a couple weeks ago and it looked like it was building a scrap but the inflammation wasn't going down. The bumble foot wasn't bad to start with. We have been adding noesporin to the wound and wrapping it up with gozz and vet wrap."

But have you tried soaking in Epsom Salts to bring down the inflammation recently?. Any time there is swelling or inflammation an Epsom Salt soak is often helpful. If you have done that at treatment great. Try it again now and see if it helps. If it does not help bring the inflammation down then you may have to go to antibiotics.

A picture would help greatly if you are able to post one. It's hard to give instructions when you can't see what's going on.

This photo was taken a week ago. We have not soaked the foot in epsom salt, but we did soak it in hydrogen peroxide. She is currently on amoxicillin. I won't be able to get a current picture until later on this week. The scab fell/tore off when it was bandaged up and there wasn't any dry blood. The wound looked clean, but I think it's going to form another scab.
