Bumblefoot?

Sweet baby ~ What color legs is normal for her breed? Does Tina's other foot have a different color? My 1st inclination is she needs antibiotics if the normal foot isn't the same color. If Tina is not limping there's no pain but still should be addressed.

Truthfully I haven't seen this before. You may need to post in BYC emergencies just to be safe ~ maybe someone will have an answer there?

Let me know when you post the emergency so I can see any answers. I know vet $$$ is tuff to spend but you know that's always my 1st go-to when a hen isn't quite right.

Sometimes she puts all her weight on it. I will post it, I really do not want to go back to the vet. It was so not worth it. This is not Tina btw, this is Beaky, yes she earned that name the really hard way but its so cute, (long story.) Tina is not limping, in fact the swelling went down a bunch! Ill tag you on the thread I make.

On Fluffy Butt Acres SimpleJenn in Michigan lost their entire flock overnight of about 20+ chickens to Avian Influenza about a week or so ago & they sadly had to burn all the carcasses at once immediately after. First one chicken got suddenly ill & died overnight & a couple days later the whole flock was found dead. If that wasn't enough to lose the whole flock suddenly, today their 10-yr-old Bearded Dragon pet died.

Most owners on Fluffy Butt Acres are befuddled why their birds are moulting so hard in the dead of winter snow season & trying to figure ways to keep them warm w/heat sources because the birds are bald. Then a couple other people lost a couple hens & a roo so sadness has been hitting a lot of chicken people I know lately. When it rains, it pours in unexpected spurts.

I feel so helpless cuz I never dealt w/those issues. Bumblefoot, Fowl Pox & Heatstroke issues I'm familiar. In the past we had to put down an unvaccinated Mareck's bird & a bleeding ovarian tumor bird at the vet's office. There are just some health issues that are too much a puzzle to wait to figure out by myself w/o a vet's assistance. Beaky's issue is a puzzle I've never seen or heard of.

Hi! Im so so sorry, I never saw this post, for some reason I never got the lil bell thingy. Oh dear! That is terrible and I feel so bad for SimpleJenn. Having chickens truely is tough, with all the problems they bring. By the way, happy new year! The summer of 2025 will hopefully bring more chicks to the flock lol! As for Beaky, I am positive that the foot is ok, not sure where the discoloration came from but she acts fine so... Her bumble is basically healed, along with Maggie. Still keeping the wrap on because it is very wet here in NJ, and sometimes starts raining randomly. The skin still needs to harden but no more infection, so yay! The only thing I did notice is that on one of her feet, the pad is very sensitive so I cannot put a corn cusion because it for some reason causes it to turn red and is not confy for her. So to improvise, I just fold a gauze pad and use that to take pressure off, but recently I notice that it keeps getting red, so I will have to keep a eye on that. As for Tina, she is also healing she just has the smallest bumble on the tip of her toe and it is impossible to wrap. Its basically a little under her toe. Its very minor so im not trying to treat it. Im planning to make a new thread on this, but figured I went this far typing so might as well ask you, is it normal for a overweight bird to breath hard at night? One of my hens has done this for maybe 5+ months. But after her molt, she seems odd. Today she was sneezing a bit and her breathing is concerning, although she only breaths hard at night.

I don't like respiratory issues only cuz it could be a result of different issues. I had a Silkie that we had wheezing like an asthma wheeze. She was so weak & wheezing we sat up w/her all night in my lap expecting to lose her. We rushed her to the vet the next morning. He treated her w/an antibiotic injection & Metcam orally & when we got home she bounced around as if she never was sick, not even wheezing any more. No idea what it was that affected her like that but respiratory issues or breathing difficulties are usually a sign of anything from low to high grade infection & birds usually lose their appetite.

Your heavy hen that moulted bad means her immunity is low at this moulting process & therefore harder to fight respiratory issues w/o some kind of antibiotic. Some pet stores carry respiratory antibiotics like ampicillin, amoxicillin, or tetracyclene for birds. Dosage is administered according to bird weight. If a bird w/ respiratory issues stops eating they can deteriorate rapidly. Any bird w/ respiratory issues should be removed away from others to halt any spread of contagion.

She stoped sneezing shortly after, I think she had something bothering her nose. She has been doing this for the longest of time so im starting to think that thats just the way she is.

I finally rembered to take pics!! Also amazing news, Beaky my one hen who had bumble is healed! Yay! She was a pain to do, always shaking her feet. Ugh. Anyways good news is she is done, and now Maggie is also really close to being done with bumble as well as Tina. The pictures are of maggies feet. Also the sneezing chicken, I have noticed that her sneezing has slowed down. Yay!

Besides the bumblefoot issues 3 yrs in a row w/our Dominique hens, before that we had a Silkie w/ reproductive issues laying eggs all 6 yrs of her life ~ she would be so agitated before laying an egg she scratched the wood nestboxes so hard & tore off a couple toenails, half a toe, & most of one toe ~ blood everywhere!

This is the Silkie "Mini" whose reproductive issues turned into a bleeding ovarian tumor & she was put down at the vet. You can sort of see her missing outer toe on each foot & missing nails if magnified. She was an absolute sweetie before the cursed cancer took her too early.

Oh yes I do see, poor baby. She is so cute! Yes, im so thankful that the feet are almost healed. I would have lost my mind.

Hi again! Hope all is well, very great news. Maggie has one wrap removed. We have been getting snow lately so they have been kept in their run that has hay bedding which is soft for their feet. So, I figured I would take off the sock that was on the foot that needed to harden, and just let her be. Glad to say, the skin has hardened and she is happy as could be!
