Bumblefoot

Sometimes it takes longer to get all the gunk out and sometimes in my case it wasn't only in the bottom of my hens foot but had moved to between her toes. Inspect the whole foot for other areas not the black plug persay but a bubble of some sort anywhere on the rest of her foot. That too needs to be cut open to get to the plug as well. If this didn't work for you then you didn't get it all out and it kept coming back.

Thanks Jen, could you tell me what you did different?

Would appreciate so I could get Sassy back on her ASAP!

Thanks Ange

Hi! I did everything that Chickenaddict did. I finally just gave up. What I think did the trick was when it got cold, and she walked in snow and the cold ground. Staph, which is what bumblefoot is, thrives in moist heat. I REALLY think it was the cold. I had said next time I have to deal with it, I'm going to try soaking in ice water. Someone suggested this was may be cruel, but if they're walking in snow, and on frozen ground, what is the difference?
Where do you have your chicken that it has staph at this time of year?
I definitely would pull the "plug" out, and use neosporin, but I'm thinking if you wrap it, that might keep warmth in? I wouldn't think you'd have to worry about any bacteria getting in now, 'cause I think it's too cold. Also, the neosporin would make a barrier against something getting in there.
This is just MY opinion:)

Boy, I don't now. I hadn't posted that I had taken Maizie Mae Marans to my vet. He charged me $85, ----for NOTHING.
He said to bring her back in two weeks if she didn't get any better. He wouldn't even help to clean her foot out! And I had paid $85 !!! Anyway, he had mentioned that the infection COULD go to her bones if it didn't clear up. Luckily, Maizie's cleared up:)

Well we did Sassy (buff orp) bumblefoot surgery last night, got the black scabs off opening up the wounds and did not see any yellowy plug or any thing but kindof a white gooy stuff, don't know if we did it right or not but we put antibiotic on them (both feet) and wrapped them, and she was walking around last night with no problems. So does it sound good or not ?

Thanks for all and any input

Make sure the bird has BUMBLEFOOT. I GAVE away a bird for free, the person who I gave him too for free, seen one scab on the foot of the poor bird, NO SWELLING, and she decides to operate like it is a full blown infection. Poor bird was prolly tramatized by all the effort to help a NON sick bird stay healthy. So make sure the bird actually has an infection. A scab is not an indection.

Well I am pretty sure she had it because along with the blacked scab, her hole feet were swelled.

Sometimes it is really hard to find and you have to dig around in there, the infection will be like a rubbery cheezy mass. I am glad to hear you wrapped her foot afterwords. Cold or not bedding and what not could get in the foot and cause a worse problem. I would try soaking her foot again tonight and see if you can get a tweezers (there will be bleeding) and dig around. If you place a cloth over the birds head you can lay her on her side and she won't fight she will just calmly lay there. I am gonna try and find a link another BYC member posted about treating bumblefoot as well.

Very informative info in this thread. Pretty much goes over everything I did

I'm worried that I over do it with my chickens anyway and don't want to sound like an idiot here..... I just got my chickens from a rescue type place and I questioned these spots on my Cuckoo Maran's feet. Now looking at the BYC forum realize it has a name (bumble foot) and needs to be removed...My questions is: Since these girls have had this for awhile, it doesn't bother them, so do I have to remove it?

I did pluck one of the callouses recently as I had no idea what it was, thought it was dried poo, and it bled like crazy. Now that I'm reading what is really was, I'm worried that it might be better left alone.

Very new to chicken raising, but trying to temper the "OMG their just chickens" and "I love my baby girls". Let me know if intervention is neccessary here or let it be.

Thanks
