Bummer!!!! Wife and kids did not like the chicken dinner

one more note, roosters tend to be stringy because they walk around a lot.. If you are gooing to butcher one, pen him in a small pen for a couple of weeks..

local farmers do the same with older cows they plan on culling.
they keep them in the stall for a few weeks and feed them corn.. no exercise.. tender meat..

I have culled 2 and 3 year old hens and roosters this way..

We own a microwave but I insist that it's kept in the garage, so I guess I'm weird too.

No microwave here, either! LOL!

The last one broke and we never replaced it. All I miss it for is microwave popcorn. That's not enough reason to go out and buy one, though, when we can make darn good popcorn on the stove top the old fashioned way!

Interesting thread- good tips.

Didn't read the whole thread, so I don't know if this was already suggested: I aged mine for a good week before freezing, and it make a LOT of difference! The first one we processed I only aged for 3 days, and it was about 3 weeks younger than the other meaties we processed. Aging really does it! Also, the older the bird the tougher the meat (I know that was already mentioned, but figured I'd underscore it again!).
