Maybe a petition signed by others who want the law changed in that area? Or maybe letters from current neighbors stating your chickens are not bothering them? Maybe ideas & feedback from other local areas that have changed their laws to allow chickens? I am thinking you should have supporting info showing chickens are a positive thing to present to the council before that vote.

Where do you draw the line? I could argue that deliberately cheating on ones taxes is done on ones own time; that driving away from a fender bender in a parking lot where there are no witnesses is on one's own time; that growing plants in your garden that your state identifies as noxious weeds is on your own time; that engaging in lewd behavior with consenting adults in a public place is on one's own time; that daily heading to the local bar and getting completely wasted is on one's own time, but these all reflect serious errors in judgement, at the best. I don't want anyone like that teaching ANY children. Teachers are, and historically have been held to a higher standard than the average citizen.

The purpose of laws is to provide equal protection. And there are means to make changes--use them.
