I've never seen this before. This round of leghorns I bought from Tractor Supply have been nothing but trouble. First of all they were suppose to be Amberlinks, and ended up being Leghorns. I've never owned leghorns. Maybe it's a characteristic of them, but this birds just dont seem to be very hardy. I dont know if it's a "feed store" issue or "leghorn" issue.

Any ideas?

It looks like a common lesion seen in chickens. There are dozens of similar ones posted about on BYC. Some seem to be caused by a tiny injury on feeders or fencing, and some think they are caused by a virus. Many of them fall off eventually. You could also try lancing it and seeing if it has pus inside. Or just put a little betadine on it and watch it to see if it disappears. Here is an identical thread with pictures about this:

Thanks!! I actually did skim through all the "beak growth" posts and read that one you sent. I just didnt see any answers and they were all from a few years ago-- didnt know if anyone had discovered the cause yet ‍:D
