Bunny Bedding Alternatives?

What about fleece? Put a layer of newspaper underneath, and fleece on

top. Clip it to the cage if the rabbits digs it up. It does not hold water/liquid,

which is why people use it. So that the animal never stands in pee basically.

When dirty, shake it out well, and throw it in the wash. Super easy. Not

expensive AT ALL. I used it for my bunny for a long time

Litter box training the rabbit would be a great idea also. They're

super easy to potty train, really.

Beddings to Avoid

x] Pine & Cedar - Can cause respiratory issues

x] Cat litter - Rabbits often eat their bedding. Clumping cat litter
can clump in the rabbit's stomach, causing blockages.
It's also very dusty, and does no good to a rabbit's lungs.

x] Glossy sales papers - Ink is toxic

OK beddings
x] Aspen - Very absorbent - Totally safe

x] Carefresh - Also very absorbent and totally safe to your rabbit

x] Straw - Is not the best, but it's OK.

x] Timothy hay - A good way of being sure your rabbit has access to it 24/7, is to use it as
bedding!

x] B&W newspaper - Horrible bedding. UNabsorbent, does NOT help urine smell. I only use it when
I have to. I DO use it to line the bottum of the litterbox, though. But it IS safe.

x] Fleece - Very good bedding. Lasts a long time. Easily washable. Does not hold urine, and
makes a very good bedding.

In what? You mean a cat litter box? She is trained in that she goes in her cage, not out in the rest of the house. I wonder if I could put cat litter in her cage? Or is that totally stupid?

She has a somewhat small cage, which is fine because I let her out a lot to run around and exercise. So what she does is use one side of the cage as a 'bathroom' and sleeps and eats on the other half of it.

Does she go in one corner/area of her cage? If so.. just buy a rabbit litter box... (pretty cheap)...
That will help keep your cage SO much cleaner....

Not a corner, but one half of the cage. One half she goes to the bathroom on, and the other half she sleeps and eats in. I have tried repeatedly putting a box in, but she uses it for a bed and moves it to the "sleep side".

Put her poop and pee (wet bedding..).. IN the box....
The she will smell the urine and poop and go back there to go potty....

If that doesnt work... shes a stubborn bun bun...

I've tried that with the poop (she flips the box over to empty it and then climbs in to sleep), but not with wet/pee bedding. I'll try it! What do you put IN the litter box, for litter? I love the Carefresh, it's just so expensive (and I really have to travel for it!).

We used pine shavings IN the box(a bag will last a long time for one litter box).. and hay for the bedding... so he knew the different areas to go potty in and sleep in..

But if you cant use the shavings... maybe try the hay in it, or the pellets.....
Trust me a bale of hay will last you a looong time for one bunny..
The only thing is... dont let him gorge himself on the new hay all at once.... buy a bale and give him little bits over a couple of weeks time to nibble on. You dont want to give him tummy troubles...
Hay is the safest though... in case he eats his new bedding..

I actually have a bale of hay for the bunny already, to eat. It's so much cheaper that way, and yes, it's lasting forever. I just never used it for bedding before. Okay, I'll try it, can't hurt. Thanks!

Nite!

We use yesterday's news brand (unscented only of course) for our rabbits. They do nibble on it some but it doesn't seem to hurt them. And our rabbits have always gotten free choice hay. I've never heard of limiting hay (we do limit pellets, especially in the warmer months).

Recycled newspaper pellets (like Yesterday's News) work well for rabbits. And adding a bit of baking soda will help to control the ammonia smell.

put it on wire with a tray under it and news papers under the tray.

$10 for a square bale? here $2.75 and ive seen round for $15 but would question the quality
