About a month ago, my neighbor's chicken laid what looked like a burnt egg. It was a smokey mahogany color, and very rough and bumpy.
Yesterday morning, I found an egg and the insides (no shell or membrane) of a second egg together on the floor under the roost, not in the nest. The yolk of the second egg had coated the first and was starting to harden. Could this be what happened before?
My neighbor just shrugs and says, "sometimes chickens lay funky eggs," which is true, but does nothing to satiate my curiosity.

This morning my other neighbor's hen had membrane stuck to her feathers, and what looks like shell fragments just inside her vent. I'm about to give her a bath.
There's nothing contagious that could cause this, right? It's just a coincidence that they are both having issues.
Could this have anything to do with the fact that she's molting?
