Busy Momma who loves chickens!!

Agree with Shannon. A friend has had house chickens for over 30 years, till her last 3 died of Mareks. She had 2 mature Serama hens, she never allowed outside because they could fly. Her one mature silkie hen was allowed out in the yard with the dog. It seems the silkie brought the Mareks's disease to the others they died a day apart. She hasn't gotten any birds since.
I'm sorry to hear that... that's so sad...

5 yrs to say hi! :idunno Glad you took a seconds to say hi!
Hello right back at ya! :frow

As far as indoor chicken raising in a suburban setting, I can't even begin to list the daily responsibilities that would be inherited.
To each their own but personally I feel livestock should be outside to breath fresh air, and humans indoors should have fresh air as well.
:)FC
I totally agree that animals should be outside!! I wish there were some way I could fight for this right to own and keep chickens outdoors in a tidy coop, but I don't really have any options.

I hate to say it but if keeping chickens is against the local law then that’s just it. The only option, besides having them outside and being fined, is having them inside, which is a little against the laws of nature, or, crazy idea, obeying the ordinance and not having chickens. Sorry.

So I get what you are saying here, really. I can't help but play Devil's advocate on this one, though. Although chickens are ideally kept outside, doesn't that apply to ALL bird species? I mean, parrots and the like were definitely made to be outdoors, but that hasn't stopped humans from domesticating them and keeping them inside.

I guess what I am trying to say is, what's the difference between a few Seramas in the house and some other kind of domesticated bird?

To the OP: it might be worthwhile to check out some of the Serama threads on this forum, lots of folks keep them indoors because they tend to not overwinter outside very well. You might find some great methods and tips!

Seramas were bred to be house pets in Malaysia. They accept confinement well. If you don't get a rooster, they are generally very quiet. My friend birds used to sit in a chair with her when she watched tv. Her dog was quite lost when the birds died of Mareks. She said he kept hunting for them throughout the house. They were 5 years old.

That’s why I said I wouldn’t have more then one or two.
I’m not being mean at all. I’ve had parrots in the past and the thing I’ve learned from that experience that was really hard to swallowing was the 95% of people shouldn’t have parrots. It’s so so so much work to keep their lives enriched when we choose to keep them in a cage. It’s our duty, when we cage an animal, a bird in particular to create as natural an environment as possible. That’s super hard with an animal that naturally covers ground and spends its entire day and brain power foraging. So I honestly do get the argument. I rehomed my beloved Cockatoo just before my son was born. It about broke my heart as Daisy and I were really bonded. But she would terrorize my husband daughter and dog. I knew that if I hadn’t the time for her then I wasn’t going to develop more time when my second baby came. I searched for months and eventually drove 200 miles to her new dad. I get updates and she is so happy in his home with her 4!! Cockatoo siblings.
I’m not gonna preach anymore at all, if you go ahead then good luck. I sincerely mean that. It might be worth building an aviary in your living room or somewhere so that you get to interact more easily and the whole family can enjoy them. My parrot cage could certainly have “housed” 2 seramas.
