But, it's too soon for chicken math to start...

So, I did my research and decided to get three hens. But, I wanted friendly/socialized chickens so, I got day old fluffy-butt babies. The feed store sold a minimum of four chicks. For some reason, I wanted an odd number in my little backyard flock so, I got five.

The five are thriving and so friendly, each one sits calmly to roost on my wrist and get feathers stroked. Uh-oh, one looks like a cockerel. No roosters where I live...oh, dear, is that a second with some possible rooster signs? Call the feed store and ask if I can get around the minimum purchase number if I am simply *replacing* a chick that I bought from them that turned out to not be a pullet. Feed store gives me the okay and informs me that the current supply of chicks is the last they are getting in this year...I come home with two, just in case.

I have only had chickens for about a month and I have gone from deciding on three to having seven in my bathroom. Is there any hope for me?

I started with 12, lost 4 over a three year span and now have around 60ish (its hard to count the fuzzy butts, they are so fast!)
Welcome to the club!!!

I have my rationale all plotted out. If only one of the original five is a cockerel, then the insurance chicks would put me at 3 Barred Rocks and 3 RIRs...BYC reasoning says that I will then have 3 chickens (of each breed can be left unsaid) like I originally planned. Yeah, that make sense ;)

As to the turkey and goose eggs, failure on the part of your family to set a limit is a clear invitation to you to explore and define those limits.

I am already lusting after an incubator and some Golden Laced Wyandotte eggs one day.

He said No to the EMU and I honored that request...Not my fault if he didn't mention the others

Lol, I understand. I am a newbie and a few weeks ago I was thinking 5-7 chicks would be just about right. Then I ended up ordering and ordered 15 from Meyer and added the free meal maker chick, so there is 16 then I found out Friday morning that they had black copper maran's available for my ship date so I ordered 2 so I was up to 18 and then later in the afternoon I found some SLW at a farm store and my son just had to have a RIR, so we bought 4 chicks there and now I'm up to a whopping 22!!

Got to say, since I had to give up my business two years ago due to back issues and then took care of my mother in law for almost a year and a half but when she finally had to go into assisted living (dementia) this has been my sole focus... He dosnt complain, I sell a lot of eggs and it pays for all the feed so its right now a cost free adventure. I just paid 10 bucks for those eggs I just put into the bator, I'll get rid of the geese if they hatch, but the turkeys I have always wanted to raise.. He makes fun of me but he is 100% behind me, has helped me build whatever I want etc... I got a good guy..

Oooooh, I'll have to look up the jubilee Orpington. Lavender Orpingtons are so pretty, too. Gracious, think of the chicken-y possibilities! As I'm the spinster of the family, I'll have to impose a little self discipline to keep things in check. Oh, dear, I am in trouble...
