Hi all, I'm new to the group and have a question. My boyfriend and I were butchering a batch of Cornish X (they're about 7.5 weeks) and one of them had and old compound fracture in the wing. It looks pretty nasty. This may be a dumb question, but can we still eat it? (I'm guessing no). I hate to waste the bird but certainly don't want to be ingesting an infected animal or feeding it to my dogs. Sad to think it should just be buried, so I wanted to check here before doing the deed.

Even if the break occured very recently you should be able to identify and cut out the non wholesome part of the carcase. If the flesh is bruised or off colored in any way dispose of that portion. Plus a little more to be on the safe side.

These birds have a lot of breast muscle that translates into wing power. That power can cause serious damage when the wing stroke encounters an immovable object. Wings that are broken (usually a compound dislocation) are rather common.

USDA allows unaffected parts of a damaged carcase to grade achieve Grade A if there is nothing else wrong.

If it was an old injury and it was indeed infected the bird would be dead or at least sick. Since you didn't notice it being sick, just whack off the injured part and cook the rest.

Ya I would do the same... more than likely the wing is a big hard knot? I've had these before, best thing to do is just cut the whole wing off.... use the rest of the bird.
