Butchering them tomorrow!

@ChocolateMouse - some people object to cutting hair for religious reasons. Feathers and hair are biologically similar. It is all good.

I didn't say it wasn't all good, I said I was curious.

I've never thought much on the hair thing before, but that makes sense. That would be a 100% acceptable answer. Weird to apply to a chicken IMO, but like, ok, whatever. See, I'm just wondering so I can know or learn or they can. If there's a religious belief about not cutting feathers that would be very interesting to know about.

I'm not completely sure on how to explain it. I just don't like it, it always makes me tear up whenever I watch a farm video where the people are cutting the wings so the bird can't escape(I can understand not wanting it to escape).

Oh ok. It doesn't hurt them, they have no nerve endings or blood vessels in the feathers. They're made of keratin - same stuff as fingernails - so it's much like cutting fingernails or hair. In fact with some breeds like silkies and polish that have soft, droopy head crest feathers it's almost exactly like that because some people trim the feathers back so that the birds can see better which helps them avoid getting eaten by hawks.

But if it makes you squeamish, I get it. My partner has a problem with growing potatoes, he thinks they look like eldritch monsters and he makes me clean all the potatoes that have started growing because he's scared of them. So, yeah, we all have our hangups.

Eldritch, huh? Like...earth trolls? Mud goblins? I'm curious. Was this person possibly traumatized by some sort of tuber in youth? Maybe when very young?

Ahaha! More like Cthulhu or Yog-Sothoth. I have NO idea why. It's more like growing potatoes with their tendrils snaking out like eels reaching up to grab you indisiously or something out of a nightmare to him. Ungrowing potatoes or merely budding potatoes he's fine with! He also has problems with those capsules you put in water and they become sponge dinosaurs. :p So to each our own.

Mind you, I'm in no way criticizing. I'm (1), an old hippy, so I have a "peace, man...it's all good" attitude, and then I'm Unitarian, so I'm (2) "whatever makes you happy as long as it's not hurting anyone else!" I was just a bit amused by the idea of a potato-monster...particularly an eldritch one! When I was growing up as a Navy kid with frequent moves to new homes all around the country, I was always afraid of closets. I knew there was nothing there (logic) but one in particular had a curtain that would move slightly in some hidden draft and I just KNEW there was something in there! (emotion)
