Buttercup is going broody. I have hatched eggs in the incubator before but have never had one of my ducks do it naturally. I think she is all business too. She has 8 or 9 eggs and she is on them most of the time. When I go out to feed them and give them fresh water, she comes running with her bill open... kinda hunched down - like get out of my way - I only have so much time to be off of that nest - so I am first to eat and drink... and you better not mess with my eggs while I am up and about. I haven't bothered her eggs... so don't know what she would do... What I don't know (is a lot ) but... do they quit laying when they go broody??? Are the other ducks okay in the pen until right before they hatch? They don't seem to be bothering her. I thought I would take the drake out right before they are do to hatch. She is a runner and I thought they weren't very good at going broody, so she may not make it all the way... but I imagine some do... or there wouldn't be many runners. : ) Any knowledge anyone could share would be appreciated.

She may have laid a few eggs after the day she actually started sitting- Mine do most of the time at least an extra one if not 2 or 3.

I have had some issues with broken eggs because of the drake trying to mate with a sitting duck. If it happens I do seperate him away. But most definately when they are due to hatch. I figure a new mum has enough to worry about with her babies- without having to fend of a drake as well.
Good luck for you and your duck- Hope she does stay on that nest and hatch you out some gorgeous babies.

I am going to section off a part of the pen for her. I know when she got up to get some water this morning the drake was chasing her around. I don't imagine that is a good thing.

Well I tried to section a portion of the pen off for her with her food and water inside. She didn't like that too much, so I took it down. She was pacing like a prisoner. I think I will just wait and see how it goes and move the drake outside when the ducklings start to hatch.

It is best to leave her then for now- Being so upset at being a prisoner will keep her off those eggs.
